FREE PROJECTS
Free tools I built for MSPs.
I still build software. Some of it solves problems that irritated me enough that I built the answer myself — and some of it I simply give away. Every one of these is free to use, self-hosted, and mostly open source.
No per-seat billing. No licence server. No account required to look at the code.
Install guides and documentation for the five open-source tools live on MSP Zero: free, self-hosted software for managed service providers. Deciding whether to run them yourself? The self-hosted versus managed guide covers what it costs to operate them.

Client St0r
Open SourceSelf-hosted IT documentation and asset management for MSPs.
THE PROBLEM
Documentation platforms bill per seat, so nobody gives the junior tech a licence and the documentation stops being written.
WHO IT'S FOR
MSPs who want documentation, an encrypted password vault and asset tracking without a per-user bill.
WHAT IT DOES
Asset management with custom fields, AES-GCM encrypted password vault, versioned documentation, website uptime monitoring with SSL tracking, rack-style infrastructure visualisation and encrypted ephemeral messaging. Multi-tenant with complete organisation data isolation, 42 granular permissions and mandatory TOTP 2FA. Built on Django 6 / Python 3.12+.
Depl0y
Open SourceProxmox VM deployment without clicking through the same build every time.
THE PROBLEM
Standing up a VM by hand is ten minutes of identical clicking, and it gets done slightly differently every time.
WHO IT'S FOR
Anyone running Proxmox across more than one node who is tired of manual builds.
WHAT IT DOES
Deploy VMs in about 30 seconds with cloud-init support, manage multiple Proxmox nodes from a single interface, and automate infrastructure deployment from templates.
St0r
Open SourceA usable web interface for UrBackup.
THE PROBLEM
Checking backups is a daily chore, so it quietly becomes a weekly one, and then it becomes the thing you find out about during a restore.
WHO IT'S FOR
MSPs running UrBackup who want backup status to be glanceable.
WHAT IT DOES
Clean dashboard, advanced client management, integrated file browser and backup monitoring over an existing UrBackup server.
OpnMgr
Open SourceCentralised management for a fleet of OPNsense firewalls.
THE PROBLEM
Applying an update across twenty firewalls means logging into twenty firewalls.
WHO IT'S FOR
MSPs running OPNsense at more than a handful of sites.
WHAT IT DOES
Zero-touch onboarding with auto-config in five to ten minutes, self-healing agents with auto-update, and automated nightly backups with version control. Remote updates, package management, command execution and bandwidth testing from one dashboard. Multi-tenant with white-label support and AI agent integration via MCP.
Rem0te
Open SourceMulti-tenant remote support built on RustDesk.
THE PROBLEM
Per-technician remote support licensing gets expensive fast, and the hosted options own your session data.
WHO IT'S FOR
MSPs wanting a self-hosted alternative to TeamViewer or AnyDesk.
WHAT IT DOES
Self-hosted, MSP-ready remote desktop with multi-tenant management, client branding and a Windows installer.
Net Agit8or
Free ToolWeb-based network troubleshooting, nothing to install.
THE PROBLEM
You need a traceroute from somewhere that is not the client site, and you need it now.
WHO IT'S FOR
Anyone diagnosing connectivity from outside the network.
WHAT IT DOES
Ping, traceroute, DNS lookup, port scanning and other diagnostics from a browser. No install, no account.
WHY GIVE THEM AWAY
Because I needed them, and the basics of running an MSP should not be billed per seat.
Every one of these started as a problem in my own MSP. I looked at what was on the market, did not like the answer or the price, and built something. Giving them away costs me nothing I was not already spending, and it is a more honest demonstration of how I think than a case study would be.
Some problems need more than a free utility. Those became commercial products and hosted services.
A tool won't fix a pricing problem.
Take anything on this page and use it. But if what's actually broken is pricing, delivery, staffing or margin, no utility fixes that. That conversation is free too.
